KUIL is pleased to announce the successful completion of a research project in collaboration with Fortinus Global, focusing on possibilities to enhance behavioural detection capabilities used by frontline teams at the border. Now is the right time to consider the possibilities around how we could deliver better capabilities and skills to frontline teams at the border, especially as border transformation is delivering a digital border that is technology based, automated, and data and intelligence led.

The project, led by Prof. Vasilis Argyriou and Prof. JC Nebel and the contributions from Dr Yannis Spyridis, involved comprehensive field visits to various key ports in the UK, including Gatwick Airport, St Pancras International, and Portsmouth Harbour. During these visits, our team highlighted potential innovative solutions for behavioural detection, using advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques, supported by a variety of sensors.

We conducted an academic evaluation of behavioural detection techniques and the maturity or possibility of technological approaches in this field and submitted our findings to Border Force for consideration. The collaboration brought together expertise from both academia and industry, leveraging Fortinus Global's (Tony Smith and Chris Hurrey) practical experience and our group's research prowess.
